Managing Safely, Risk Assessment and Control

Introduction

This highly-interactive training course will provide you with all the necessary information and abilities to successfully understand both ionizing and non-ionizing types of radiation materials and, how to effectively manage these radiation materials safely and with confidence to ensure personnel health and safety and/or to prevent potential environmental impacts.

Most business sector (industry, commercial, and service) organizations use, store, and dispose of radioactive materials within their normal day-to-day business activities, these business sectors include:

  • Oil and gas industry (offshore and onshore facilities)
  • Medical facilities (hospitals and clinics)
  • Service industries (laboratories, etc,.)
  • Manufacturing companies
  • Plus, many other business sectors
  • Personnel needs to be fully informed, trained, and monitored to ensure they are not exposed to radiation materials during their work activities and/or when using, storing, or disposing of radioactive sources.

Objectives

    The learner will be able to:

    • Describe the key reasons to manage safety and health in the workplace
    • Define the key terms relating to safety and health
    • Identify how the law can have an impact on safety and health in the workplace
    • Describe how to assess, reduce and control risk in the workplace
    • Identify workplace hazards and risks, their impact, and how to manage them
    • Identify how to evaluate and respond to an incident
    • List the benefits and characteristics of an effective health and safety management system
    • Describe the principles that underpin good safety and health performance

Training Methodology

This is an interactive course. There will be open question and answer sessions, regular group exercises and activities, videos, case studies, and presentations on best practice. Participants will have the opportunity to share with the facilitator and other participants on what works well and not so well for them, as well as work on issues from their own organizations. The online course is conducted online using MS-Teams/ClickMeeting.

This interactive course will benefit anyone who desires to develop an organizational understanding of Fire and Safety competences to allow them to carry out Fire Risk Assessment processes, prepare emergency plans and so enhance their careers. It is also intended for those who are responsible for enhancing fire safety awareness and emergency planning practices in industrial applications: Those who manage others and manage risk and resources.

Course Outline

Module one: Introducing managing safely

  • The three key moral, legal and financial reasons for managing safely
  • Manager responsibility and accountability for safety and health in the workplace

 Module two: Risk Assessment

  • Definitions of the terms ‘hazard’, ‘hazardous event’ and ‘risk’
  • Definition of the term ‘risk assessment’
  • Definition of the terms ‘likelihood’ and ‘consequence’
  • Risk assessment process and risk rating systems
  • The benefits of carrying out a risk assessment

Module three: Controlling risks

  • How to reduce risk by applying the ‘hierarchy of risk control
  • Definition of the term ‘residual risk’

Module four: Understanding hazards

      The six main hazard categories and how hazards can fall into more than one group:

  • mechanical
  • physical
  • chemical
  • environmental
  • biological
  • organizational

  Common hazards in the workplace, their effects, and symptoms and how to manage them. Hazards covered are:

  • Chemicals
  • Electricity
  • Fire
  • Plant and machinery
  • Temperature
  • Spillage

Module Five: Investigating incidents

  • Definition of the terms ‘incident’, ‘accident’ and ‘near miss’
  • Incident reporting
  • The stages of a structured approach to incident investigation

Module Six: OSHA HAZID (Hazard Identification) Simulation Game & Video

Module Seven: WSH Workplace Safety and Health Risk Management: code of practice: revision 2012 - WSH Council.

Module Eight: ISO DIS.2 45001-2017: OHSMS (Occupational Health & Safety Management System) (Which will replace OHSAS 18001:2007 in next March 2018)
