Lifting Equipment and Mobile Cranes Inspection

Introduction

The absence of good lifting practices contributes to a large percentage of material handling accidents. This program, through classroom problems and practical sessions, will instruct attendees in determining the correct size and type of lifting equipment required to safely perform lifting operations. Further, this course discusses various types of equipment (static & mobile) including Wire Ropes, Slings, Hitches, Shackles, Hooks, Eye Bolts, Turnbuckles, Spreader Beams, Man-Baskets, Sheares, Blocks, Drums, Chains, Hoists, Jacks, and Rollers.

This course is designed to ensure all personnel involved in rigging and lifting operations have an understanding of the requirements pertaining to rigging operations, the requirements for pre-use inspection and discard criteria of lifting equipment, the safe working procedures for rigging, and to ensure delegates can use lifting equipment safely and not exceed the load limit imposed on them.

The course will train attendees on the use and inspection of Lifting Equipment, Hazards, and Controls required for static and mobile lifting equipment, lifting procedures, color coding, and risk assessment. Further, the course includes conduction and presentation of a Lifting Study using WinRig Software, which is designed to give all wire rope, sling, and hardware data. This software also performs calculations based upon various rigging configurations.

Objectives

Upon the successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

    • List the color codes used at the site and understand the reasons and advantages of using Color Coding for lifting equipment
    • Know the certification requirements for static and mobile lifting equipment in line with load signaling, hoisting equipment, and crane operators
    • Recognize the methods of inspection of lifting equipment such as wire rope slings, polyester webbing sling, round (endless) sling, chains, and etc
    • Get familiarized with the methods of pre-lift planning by understanding the lift plan requirements, module lift, and ANSI/OSHA standards
    • Become aware of all aspects of mobile crane safety such as crane signals, crane identification, hoisting systems, and crane safety features
    • Enhance knowledge in risk assessment methodology by reviewing of fatality reports resulting from improper rigging practices, and other special considerations such as slip, trip, fall hazards, electrical hazards, explosive environment and etc
    • Have in-depth understanding in safe lifting and rigging practices by means of rigging study assessment techniques using Win Rig Software and practical lifting and rigging training with a live crane which will be performed during the course

Training Methodology

This is an interactive course. There will be open question and answer sessions, regular group exercises and activities, videos, case studies, and presentations on best practice. Participants will have the opportunity to share with the facilitator and other participants on what works well and not so well for them, as well as work on issues from their own organizations. The online course is conducted online using MS-Teams/ClickMeeting.
